REFLECTION JOURNAL 1
Based on what I have learned in my past English class, there are many types of literacy therefore one unified definition would be difficult to come up with only one definition. I feel like the umbrella definition would be how one interprets literature and other aspects of life which affects one's life each day.
Visual literacy is understanding information that is presented to the eye; not in written form. Pictures, movies, sculptures, and paintings are forms of visual literacy. Visual literacy lets the mind relax from reading and activates other portions of the brain which might give the viewer a different perspective of a given set of information.
Multi-modal literacy is when other things such as t-shirt, and games or cartoons are created to convey the same point as another form of literacy.
REFLECTION JOURNAL 2
After watching "How to make a splash in social media" I realized that when people in in the world come together they can really make a difference in the world. I was shocked that so many people would come together on a naming of a whale. I guess that showed that a mass of people could unite on something that the found "important." In today's era a lot of people are using social media, whether it is facebook, twitter, or others. Alexis was correct when I said that once you put something on the internet it is out of your control. I have personally been through this myself.
Pop Culture in the Arab world is the same as it is in the USA only they have altered things to relate to their culture. Even in the toys that the younger children play. They dolls for girls are clothed in the manner as which most of the women are dressed in society. Action figures have the qualities of the god they worship. I liked how their music stations are VERY different from the way that many Americans might perceive the Islamic music stations.
These videos relate to the class because we are discussing pop culture. We are now getting the view of a different culture with what is popular to them and how their values as a whole are similar and different to our own. I feel that we will be exploring particular aspects of our culture that is important to us and digging deeper to understand why it is.
After watching the other TED videos one could write on how the clothing affects one's view on others. I think people do this without even realizing it. These videos tell that we have let the physical things and outside appearances control how we "judge" people.
REFLECTION JOURNAL 3
When it comes to feedback from peers I consider what they say but ultimately it is my decision if I take it or not. I feel this way because they are not professionals and I might not think that their input would benefit my project if it was placed into the project I was working on. Instructors however; their feedback is taken more seriously. I do this because not only are they the ones grading what I'm doing but they should be trying to make me better at whatever I am trying to do.
I try my best to give feedback that is usable. I ask questions about the things that I didn't understand. Then I try my best to tell how it could have been tweaked to be made a little better. I find this to be constructive feedback. However with every "bad/negative" statement I try to give one or two positive things about the project.
I take feedback seriously if the person who is giving the feedback is sincere about what they are writing. For example; if a person writes "it was horrible" I'm not going to take that seriously unless I feel the same also.
I take feedback into a great consideration when I do a redraft. Apparently there was something that I didn't explain well or elaborated to much on. Sometime from the feedback one can think of more ideas based off of what another person thought.
The first peer editing process went better than I thought. I didn't have a lot of people commenting so I felt like I touched on all the things that were asked for in the proposal. I thought that since I was doing a project on body modification more people would have things to say about the topic but very few did.
ePORTFOLIO REFLECTION
After reading the two assigned readings I now understand the purpose of a portfolio and the was it helps me and others understand and see how far I have come. The elements of effective layout showed me how to make my portfolio flow and easier to understand. Understanding Portfolios showed me the important things to place into my portfolio. With both of these articles I learned that I can create an easy comprehensive maneuverable portfolio.
